Ongley, qc Pioneer Of The Year Award: In 1952 the C.P.P. marked the Golden Anniversary of the Silver Screen in Canada, dating it from the establishment of the first successful motion picture theatre — the Electric of John Schulberg on Cordova Street, Vancouver, which he opened in the fall of 1902. At the celebration banquet, held in the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Schulberg, Jule Allen of Toronto, George Ganetakos of Montreal, A.J. Mason of Springhill, va Scotia, L. Ernest Ouimet of Montreal, a Fred G. Spencer of Saint John, New Brunswick, were honored as pre-1910 pioneers who had done the most to advance the motion picture as a popular form of entertainment in its early days. Spencer passed on shortly before the banquet and Schulberg, Ganetakos and Allen have died since. The next year, the Pioneer of the Year Award was inaugurated.
