It is the only organization in Canada that represents the interests of cinematographers exclusively. Its aims are: 1. To promote and foster cinematography in Canada. 2. To develop and promote the interests of Canadian cinematographers. 3. To provide membership with technical and other information for the improvement of their knowledge, work andstatus. 4. To function towards the achievement of these purposes free fromall partisan political, labour-managementandotherissues not related to these stated aims. For over 21 years more than 300 cinematographers, assistant-cameramen and film students have become membersofthe Canadian Society of Cinematographers. Members of the Society are active participants at meetings of the Academy of Canadian Cinema, the CFDC and other groups within the film community. The Society founded the magazine “Canadian Cinematography” which later became “Cinema Canada”, now published independently. Through meetings held on the first Monday of each month, September through May, the executive strives to have interesting and informative discussions on current and new equipment, new techniques and problems that may affect professional cinematographers. Several members areinstructors at universities and colleges across Canada and the Society periodically organizes special classes for assistant cameramen and others interested in learning the essentials of cinematography. Byactiveandfinancialsupportto the CSC, professional cinematographers are able to make their collective voices heard when problems arise in the film industry and possibly find mutually acceptable remedy. Each year the CSC holds an awards function and trophies are presented to members only in the following categories: Feature CSC Award TV Drama CSC Award Documentary CSC Award TV Commercials CSC Award Student Films Plaque News Roy Tash Award In addition, and not necessarily each year, the Bill Hillson Award (aminiature Arriflex) is presented to a member of the CSC who has performed outstandingservice to the Society or has made a special contribution to the art of cinematography. Also, membershavewon international recognition and awards including the coveted ‘Oscar’. MEMBERSHIP Membership in the CSC is divided into the folowing categories: Affiliate Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as an assistant cameraman or camera operator or be active in a field directly related to cinematography such as teaching or studying cinematography at a recognized Canadian institution of learning. Affiliate members have no voting privileges and are not permitted to serve on the board of directors. They have the right, and are encouraged to attend, all membership meetings and may serve on committees. Associate Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as a cinematographer or camera operator for a period of at least three years. Teachers of cinematography may be considered for this category provided they have sufficient previous practical experience. Affiliate applicants must be in good standing. Full Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as a cinematographer for a period of at least ten years and must also be fully qualified to assume the responsibilities of Director of Photography. Alternatively, the applicant must have to his credit, exceptional achievement as a cinematographer. Only full members are entitled to use the initials ‘CSC’ after their names on screen credits, correspondence and stationery. Full membership is not automatically acquired after ten years nor does the ten-year limit always apply. Full membership is granted only after the membership committee has screened an applicant's film examples which must show an ability to light interiors and exhibit a high standard of excellence. Full membership applications are reviewed once annually and are granted only upon unanimous approval of the board of directors. Associate applicants must be in good standing. Honorary Membership Honorary membership may be awarded by the membership committee to Canadian laymen who have promoted, or are promoting, through their efforts, the interests of cinematography in Canada. Honorary members are not active, as such, in the reqular business of the Society. Life Membership Life membership is awarded by the board of directors to members who have retired from active cinematography and who have been particularly valuable to the Society in the past.
