FILM CLASSIFICATION BRITISH COLUMBIA Film Classification Ministry of Attorney-General 140 E. 8th Ave. Vancouver, B.C. V5T 1R7 (604) 879-6564 Director: Mary-Louise McCausland Film Classification (a) General Entertainment — The content of these films should not be found offensive to the general public. (b) Mature Entertainment — the word “mature” was a deliberate choice, designed to act as a guide to parents. The subject matter of a film in this classification or the way in which it is portrayed may not be appropriate for some young people. There is no age restriction for this classification, but warnings are often added. (c) Restricted Entertainment — because of the nature or contents of these films, persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to attend unless they are accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult who must remain with the underaged person during the entire film. As a condition of admittance, the theatre has the right to require the accompanying adult to sign a form accepting responsibility for the underaged person. (Notes from parents giving permission for a child to see a Restricted film are not acceptable.) (d) Warnings — to help the movie-goer to choose his or her entertainment, warnings about possibly offensive material are often added to the classification. These notes may include such statements as “frequent coarse language and swearing”, “some nudity and suggestive scenes”, or “occasional frightening and violent scenes”.
