The Canada Council was created by an Act of Parliament in 1957 which was revised in 1977. Its mandate is to promote the arts, and it carries out its work mainly through a broad program of grants and services to professional artists and arts organizations. The Council also has some responsiblity for promoting Canadian culture abroad, and administers the Canadian Commission for Unesco and special programs financed by private donations. The Council reports to Parliament through the Minister of Communications and appears before the Standing Committee on Culture and Communications.
Film Production Grants
Applicants must have directed at least one film or have produced a body of work in video.
The Council requires that filmmakers have total editorial control over the proposed production. Films being produced, co-produced or sponsored by another federal or provincial government agency are not eligible.
The maximum amount available for a single film production is $40,000 to cover total or partial production costs.
Deadlines for receipt of applications are March 15, July 15 and November 15. Applicants are notified of the results of their application approximately ten to twelve weeks after these dates. Application forms are available from the Media Arts Section.
Other Grants
Professional filmmakers may be eligible for assistance through other grant programs administered by the Canada Council These include the Aid to Artists Program (Arts Grants “A”; Arts Grants “B”; Short-Term Grants, Project Cost Grants; Travel Grants), and the Explorations Program.
