The first Canadian Student Film Festival was organized in 1969 and has been held each year since then. This Festival permits the actual feel of the pulse of future generations of filmmakers and also an awareness of the level achieved by these young people. This is a competitive festival with winners receiving cash prizes.
Certain films presented at the Festival have gone on to win prizes in international manifestations “Metamorphosis” won the first prize in the short subject category at the 1976 Cannes Festival In 1982, all the winners of the previous year were presented in the Cannes Directors Fortnight

Begun in 1976, Festival of Festivals (Toronto's International Film Festival) is a non-competitive event extending over 10 days, offering a wide selection of recent Canadian and international feature and short films, as well as retrospectives, special events, craft conferences, and seminars. Guest directors and film personalities are in attendance.
The 1985 Festival includes, for the seventh year, a Trade Forum for Canadian and international industry representatives to exchange information on the business of filmmaking,
Each year, the public attending the Festival casts ballots for the Labatt's Award for the Most Popular Film. The winner in 1984 was Robert Benton’s Places In The Heart (USA 1984).
The Marquee International Critics Award, selected by the 250 accredited members of the press attending the Festival was won by Alan Rudolph’s Choose Me (USA 1984).
The Toronto-City Award for Excellence in Canadian Production, sponsored jointly by the City of Toronto and CITY-TV and chosen by a jury, was won by Lea Pool for La Femme de IHotel (Canada 1984).
