This non-competitive festival aims to seek out and promote the artistic, cultural and social values of current independent production, and to emphasize its importance.
The 1984 festival presented 140 short and feature-length films and 100 video productions. Forty-five guest filmmakers also presented their films and videos. The festival also provides a forum for exchange and discussion with the public. In 1984, it introduced the First Quebec Independent Film & Video Market

The only competitive festival in America recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations.
The aim of the Festival is to encourage understanding between nations, to foster the art of cinematography, to promote meetings in North America between cinema professionals from the world over, and to stimulate the motion picture industry.

The Jury will award prizes for.
(a) Feature films: The Grand Prix of the Americas; Best Actress; Best Actor, two Jury Prizes
(b) Short films: The Montreal Grand Prix, Jury Prize
Also: The International Press Award for the best Canadian feature film not in competition, and the Air Canada Award for the most popular film of the Festival The International Film Market will take place during the Montreal World Film Festival It has been set up to promote international meetings and exchanges and will be held August 25—31, 1985.
THE ONTARIO FILM INSTITUTE AWARD
This Award for Excellence in Canadian Cinema is given annually to a film or film maker which best represents indigenous Canadian values in the cinema.
