THE
Esquire FOREMEN WENT TO FRANCE
Payoff: Without a doubt one of the top-ranking stories of the war. It yields hardly anything to the finest of war dramas to date. Word of mouth should boom it and it’s full of things that will set people talking. The present title, an English one, will be changed. Exciting from first to last and presented with heart-warming honesty, it deserves a place in every exhibitor’s bookings.
What Goes On: The whole picture is a chase set against the background of a beaten and burning France, which begins when Clifford Evans, as the Foreman, sneaks some valuable machines out under the noses of the Nazis and races them to the coast and safety. The story, incidentally is true. The scenes of destruction and refugee suffering are vivid, as are the occasional clashes. They will be remembered for a long time.
Sizeup: An old favorite, Constance Cummings, is the girl here. Clifford Evans, as the Foreman, give a swell performance and young Gordon Jackson, a newcomer, captures much of the acting honors. Tommy Trinder helps Jackson with the comedy, which is surprisingly good Robert Morley plays a fifth columnist.

HOLIDAY INN
TEN
Payoff: An outstanding musical for the dance, song and Irving Berlin fans. Lively, gay and filled with song all the way, it should find a waiting public these strenuous days. There's Crosby and Astaire dishing out big chunks of their stuff with regularity and enjoyment. A new girl, who sings with Crosby and dances with Astaire, is Marjorie Reynolds and she is destined to be big stuff soon.
What Goes On: The goings-on in the lives of the characters are obviously shaped by a rigid idea—that of featuring the seasons musically. Crosby, breaking away from partner Astaire, open an inn that operates on holidays only. Astaire is a love larcenist who has pilfered their partner who is Crosby’s gal. So Crosby checks out, opens the inn and gets another gal—Reynolds this time. The wolfish Astaire wins her too—but Crosby gets her at the fadeout.
Sizeup: It’s great stuff, all right, and made to order for these times. There’s Walter Abel, Louise Beavers and Virginia

GENTLEMEN FROM WEST POINT
Payoff: A miiltary western full of punch, with some unusual action sequences. The studio was wise enough to use the rich historical background of the academy, therefore doing away with any confusion about is being just another West Point picture.
What Goes On: Story deals with overcoming the opposition to the establishment of the famed military school after the American revolution. Laird Cregar, as the rock-hard commander of the school who shares opposition views, is great. He gives the first ten students a rough ride literally and figuratively. A disbeliever in tactics, he’s won over when the boys show a small number of soldiers how to panic a large camp of Indians and recapture Cregar.
Sizeup: George Montgomery and John Sutton are students of different social worlds who fight over the affections of Maureen O’Hara, an academy advocate. Ward Bond, Douglas Dumbrille, Joe Brown, Jr. and other capable players help make it a fine adventure drama.

EAGLE SQUADRON
Payoff: This picture of Yanks in the RAF is loaded with action ‘and is at its best when it sticks to war doings. The story pales beside the fights, bombings and burnings. Quentin Reynolds, in making the introduction from the screen, does more than any other individual to make the human side real.
What Goes On: Robert Stack is the volunteer who balks at the seeming indifference of the others to the death of their comrades. It takes Dianna Barrymore and a Commando raid to make him see through to the truth. John Loder is his rival for Barrymore.
Sizeup: There are some fine individual performances by Eddie Albert, Nigel Bruce, Leif Erikson, Jéhn Hall, Evelyn Ankers, Gladys Cooper and Edgar Barrier. Miss Barrymore’s performance is right in the family tradition.
Columbia
ATLANTIC CONVOY
Payoff: A tight, suspenseful little drama about spies and sabotage in Iceland. It has much to recommend it from a standpoint of timeliness and mystery.
What Goes on: John Beal is an Iceland resident who acts as the USA airmen’s weather adviser. His silence and ability makes him the object of suspicion as a spy. His aviation ability is revealed when he relieves the injured pilot of a rescue plane and brings those saved safely back in the damaged airship. One these is a German agent. Beal, it is later shown, is a drummed-out ex-Marine, who squares himself by foiling sabotage.
Sizeup: Virginia Field, Clifford Severn, Victor Kilian and Bruce Bennett keep it moving.

MEN OF SAN QUENTIN
Payoff: Good prison pictures are always popular and this one falls in that class. It’s the real stuff, filmed at the jail itself for much of the footage, and is the story of one warden’s administration.
What Goes On: One of the guards, with more humane ideas, draws the dislike of the other guards for his kindness and popularity with the prisoners. They try to frame him but lose out in the end and the film shows the new system at work.
Sizeup: Modest but highly suitable for excitement portions. J. Anthony Hughes, Eleanor Stewart, Dick Curtis and Charles Middleton are among the large cast.
