Canadian FILM WEEKLY UA Plans 148 Pix For New Season United Artists has started on its 1944-45 film schedule with five completed pictures, four in production, 11 nearing final script and casting stages and 28 other films planned to round out the program, the company announced last week at its eastern sales meeting in New York. Selznick’s “Since You Went Away” and “Double Furlough,” Hunt Stromberg’s “Guest in the House,” Edward Small’s “Abroad With Two Yanks” and Seymour Nebenzal’s “Summer Storm.” Now before the cameras are Bing Crosby’s first United Artists’ film, “The Great John L.,” Benedict Bogeau’s “Dark Waters,” Sol Lesser’s “3 Is a Family,” and Lester Cowan’s “Tomorrow the World.” In the rest of the production line up Vanguard will deliver “The House of Dr. Edwardes;” Sol Lesser “Civilian Clothes;” Benedicte Bogeau’s “There Goes Lona Henry;” William Cagney Productions will account for “Blood on the Sun,” “Port Royal,” “Only the Valiant,” “Bugles in the Afternoon,” “The Stray Lamb” and an untitled mystery story; Lester Cowan plans “GI Joe” and “Woman of the Sea;” Charles R. The cartoon section, Plastic Products Inc., is headed by John Sutherland, formerly with Walt Disney. The title of the first cartoon is “Cross Eyed Bull.” Scrapbook Awards To Manitoba Exhibs The second and third awards in the Manitoba scrap book contest for the Sixth Victory Loan campaign were last week given to Harry Gray, Lyric Theatre, Winnipeg, who received a $25 war savings certificate and Joe Derry, Palace Theatre, Kenora, who won a $10 war sayings certificate, Through an oversight their names were not listed on previous award rolls. Sonin, was announced last week by David Bernstein, vice-president and treasurer of Loew’s. Wolff has served the company in many capacities for 26 years.
