Yates, president of Republic Pictures Corporation, and Sir Alexander Korda signed an agreement Jast week confirming the terms and conditions of the existing pact made last year between the two organizations, in which British Lion will continue to distribute Republic product exclusively in Great Britain. The confirmation of the original agreement made between Yates and the late Samuel W. Smith, was necessitated when, recently, Korda purchased the controlling interest of British Lion from the Smith and N. L. Nathanson estates. Mention of other production and distribution potentialities took place between the two company heads, but Yates stated, “These are to be considered as being only their very’ early stages,” Westmount Theatre United Theatres Amusement Company has announced through William Lester, manager, that the company will build a $150,000 theatre on Greene Avenue, Westmount, Quebec. Plans call for a seating capacity of 1,152 people. Peter Rathvon, RKO president, said in New York last week on his first trip east since assuming the presidency of RKO Radio Pictures and administration of the studio as production head. The stellar personalities in the 20 include Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman, Dick Powell, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Danny Kaye, Maureen O’Hara, Joan Bennett, Rosalind Russell, Cary Grant. Dorothy McGuire, Claudette Coibert, Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine, Randolph Scott, Ginger Rogers, Edward G. Robinson, Jean Pierre Aumont, Virginia Mayo, John Wayne and Ethel Barrymore. Three of the 20 are in Technicolor. Seven of the aggregation are independent productions. For some time Schaefer has been trying to buy out United Artists, but has apparently abandoned this idea and is now set on forming a rival organization. Deals are currently being made with important producers, Schafer making full use of his heavy Wall Street and Chicago financial backing. The organization is incorporated in New Ycrk State as George Schaefer and Associates at present. Disagreement between the three stockholders of United Artists—Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin and David O. Selznick— has reduced UA income in the Jast five years, and although Schaefer is on good terms with all three, they refused to accept a $4,000,000 offer for a partnership for Schaefer.
