Page 4 Churches Against "Duel In The Sun’ Pending a classification on David O. Selznick’s ‘Duel in the Sun” by the Legion of Decency, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches have turned in adverse reports charging the film is “im‘moral.” The Legion of Decency usually issues its statement on a new film before or at the time of release, but in this instance the film was shown in Los Angeles before the classification was forthcoming. In a letter to pastors Archbishop Cantwell said Catholics “may not with a free conscience attend the motion picture ‘Duel in the Sun.’ This motion picture, of which the National Legion of Decency was not offered the usual advance viewing, appears to be morally offensive and spiritually depressing.” The Federation of Protestant Churches .in Los Angeles sent a letter of protest to Selznick stating that “Wrong doing was shown to win every conflict with the right,” and was signed by Melvin H. Harter, assistant to Dr. C. E. Farnham who is executive secre tary. More NEB 16 Mm.
