Toronto Station Drops Pic Progs
Rolly Ford, manager of CHUM, Toronto’s newest radio station, has ordered the cancellation of programs which “publicize the film industry” because “the theatre interests have too long enjoyed the benefit of free publicity on the air, and have been most reluctant to direct even a small portion of their advertising budgets to support radio stations.” Ford's stand was stated in a letter addressed to Laura Elston and sent to members of the motion picture industry explaining why her thrice-weekly 15-minute program was dropped after four airings. Miss Elston had brought to the station's listeners such stars as Helmut Dantine, Pamela Brown and Jane Baxter.
“It was only this week,” writes Ford, ‘“a representative of the film industry, brought to my attention the fact that as long as radio stations were willing to give film mentions and offer free publicity in return for free passes, etc., the film industry was not likely to spend good money for such services.”
The lion’s share of the film industry’s local advertising appropriation has always gone into newspaper space, he said, and he intended to maintain his policy until recognition was given radio.
“Your programs have indeed been excellent,” he wrote to Miss Elston, “I have never heard a better program dealing with the stage and film industry. We were all most happy about your program, and we particularly appreciated the way you were able to arrange studio interviews for visiting stars and celebrities.”

Boasberg's New RKO District
(Continued from Page 1) rapidly expanding activities
Canada, along with
York, Metropolitan, the Bae eastern and the Southwestern districts, will constitute the an division. 3
Reason for the change, as given by Robert §, Mochrie vice-president and genera] sales manager, is: “With the great number of important boxoffice pictures now being handleq by RKO Radio, it has become necessary to re-allocate activitieg attendant on their proper distribution.” The Canadian district was formerly part of Mochrie’s own duties but increasing pressure on him made a transfer of work and responsibility necessary,
Devaney said that the change would be beneficial to the aqministration and operation of the Canadian district and that Canadians will like Boasberg, who will be visiting this country several times annually.
Len S. Gruenberg, Rocky Mountain district manager and captain of the Ned Depinet drive, will replace Boasberg as manager of the Metropolitan district.
This new move will give RKO Radio three major sales divisions — the western division headed by Walter E. Branston; the eastern division under Nat Levy; and the newly-created division headed by Charles Boas
berg. Boasberg has been with RKO Radio since December, 1931,
when he joined the Buffalo exchange as salesman, advancing to manager in March, 1937. He was appointed eastern central district manager in June, 1940, with headquarters in Cleveland. In April, 1944, he was advanced to the position of metropolitan district manager.
