Movie Expa nsion In Newfoundland
(Continued from Page. 1)’ struction. Recently a new com
pany in which some of the prin-
cipals of United Movies are interested was chartered at $75,000 and will erect a theatre in St. John’s.
Among the locations now ‘being worked on by United Movies are Spaniard’s Bay, Carbonear, Burin, Grand Bank, Placentia and Manuels, The company was incorporated earlier in the year with a capital of $150,000.
At present there are three’ situations in Cornerbrook, eight in St. John’s and one each in Belle Isle, Botwood, Deer Lake, Grand Falls, Gander and Torbay. The last two are in RCAF stations.
All companies with the exception of United Artists service Newfoundland from Saint John, New Brunswick, heéadquarters of the film. territory of which Canada’s neighbor. is a part. United Artists -service it from Boston.
Inclusion of Newfoundland in the Canadian confederation, which will become a reality if present negotiations are successful, will cause little change in current relations. There is no remittance tax on rentals leaving Newfoundland for Canada, all such revenue being sent here first. Canadian offices or representatives of USA. distributors include. Newfoundland rentals in the Canadian and pay our withholding tax on the whole when transferring funds to the United States home offices. The tax is 15 per cent of two-thirds of such funds.
There would be no gain in sending Newfoundland film rentals direct to the USA, for exchange would have to he paid. Canada allows film revenue to be transferred at par and application of the Dominion withholding tax makes neither method superior to the other.
