Johnston Intro s Louis B. Mayer
Some time ago Eric Johnston, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, introduced Louis B. Mayer, head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios, to a gathering that was about to hear an address by him. Mayer is from St. John, New Brunswick, and holds an honorary degree from the University of New Brumswick.
Canadians will be interested in Mr. Johnston’s introduction, which follows:
“Tt is always difficult to introduce a man. There’s an everpresent tendency to say too much about him—or to say too little. In the case of Louis B. Mayer it would be impossible to say too much. He is a whole speech in himself, not just a subject for a brief introduction.
“The story of Louis B. Mayer is the great American story told all over again. It’s the story of the man who lifted himself to eminence by his spirited imagination, infinite patience and dauntless effort.
‘Tt is the Louis B. Mayers who have made this country great, and who are the timeless inspirations for others to follow in the sturdy paths which they have beaten.
“The incredible thing to me is how Louis B. Mayer finds time and has found time these many years to do so many things to so much good purpose-—the time to give himself unstintingly for the betterment of others.
“T repeat, I don’t know how he does it. His day in, day out responsibilities at MGM _ alone would terrify the ordinary man. But half his time at any rate finds Louis B. Mayer in the role of a volunteer and in the vanguard of those who are leading the good fight for some good cause.
“And here he is again—again a leader in one of the noblest causes of owr times. The United Jewish Appeal is not the cause alone for those of the Jewish faith. It is a cause for all Americans. It is humanity’s cause. The imperishable courage of the Jewish people is an everlasting inspiration to free men and women everywhere.
“Louis B. Mayer's dedication to this great cause is another manifestation of his warm and generous heart and of his magnificent talents.
“It would be hard to think of Louis B. Mayer and not think of motion pictures, but he might have been anything and still be What he is—a great American— for he would have suwzceeded in any walk of life.
“He could have been a statesman, and, indeed, he is, without

the title, for he is the confidant of statesmen, the wise counsellor and thoughtful, shrewd advisor.
“He might have been an artist in the usual meaning of the word, and indeed he is in simple fact, but again without the title. His pictures have a touch to them the close observer could detect — their famous label—a touch that’s all his own.
“The business genius of men like Louis B. Mayer has meant so much to our America.
“But I believe that Louis B. Mayer's greatest contribution to his beloved country has simply been himself.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the man with the lion emblem—the man with the lion heart--and I give you the lion of the evening.—Lowuis B. Mazer.’
