PREMIER FROST QUOTES BARRIS
Answering criticism of laxness in Ontario’s motion picture censorship in the Ontario Legislature, Premier Leslie Frost read into Hansard a complete article by Alex Barris, movie critic of the Globe and Mail, Toronto. Barris, dealing with the complaint of Peter Manley, MP that ‘a lower moral standard’ had been adopted for Ontario cities by the censor, discussed the difficulties involved in satisfying so many elements of the population in the matter of acceptable movies.
The Premier’s comments and his action followed criticism by Joseph M. Salsberg, MPP, who praised British and European films and claimed that those from Hollywood offered “kewpie dolls and cardboard lovers.”
The article by Barris, a former member of the Press Gallery, praised Ontario’s censorship and the Premier commented: “It is the opinion of a great critic, a very intelligent and considerate reviewer of films.”
Premier Frost is also head of the Provincial Treasury, which has jurisdiction over the censorship board headed by O. J. Silverthorne.
