These photos, taken by Alex Gray for the Variety Club of Toronto, show scenes at the annual graduations of the pupils of Variety Village, the vocational guidance school and residence in Scarborough, near Toronto, which is supported by show and sports folk. DeMille was presented with the Salvation Army’s first “Sally” award by the USA national commander, Donald McMillan of New York, before 1,000 persons in the Statler Hotel, Los Angeles, last week. It will go annually to the individual whose accomplishments for the social and spiritual bettermen of Mankind is in harmony with Salvation Army ideals and practices. The award is symbolized by a statuette eight inches in height which shows a Salvation Army girl guiding the steps of a small boy. Mike Zahorchak Sued By Gypsy Rose Lee? Gypsy Rose Lee and four members of her troupe, along with Paul Kligman and other Canadian performers, filed a writ asking $2,000 in Osgoode Hall, Toronto against M. W. Zahorchak of Niagara Falls, Ontario, who last year presented live entertainment in the Hollywood Theatre there in association with Eric Greenwood. Another claim asks $5,000 from Greenwood and the London and Lancashire Guarantee and Accident Company of Canada, considered by the issuers of the writ to be the bondholder.
