James Davie SOCFCRATY-TFCOSUTEL ...cceeeesssesesssenessseneneneneneranen Larry Strick THE PIONEER OF THE YEAR AWARD In 1952 the CPP marked The Golden Anniversary of the Silver Screen in Canada, dating it from the establishment of the first successful motion picture theatre—the Electric of John Schuberg on Cordova Street, Vancouver, which he opened in the Fall of 1902. At the celebration banquet, held in the Royal York Hetel, Toronto, Schuberg, Jule Allen of Toronto, George Ganetakos of Montreal, A. J. Mason of Springhill, NS, L. Ernest Ouimet of Montreal and Fred G. Spencer of Saint John, NB were honcred as pre-1910 pioneers who had done the most to advance the motion picture as a popular form of entertainment in its early days. Spencer passed on shortly before the banquet and Schuberg, Ganetakos and Allen have died since. The next year The Pioneer of the Year Award was inaugurated. The first Crew was comprised of John J. Fitzgibbons, Chief Barker; Paul L. Nathanson, First Assistant Chief Barker; the late L. M. Devaney, Second Assistant Chief Barker; the late B. S. Okun, Dough Guy; O. R. Hanson, Property Master; and the late William P. Covert, H. L. Nathanson, the late Ben Freedman, the late Gordon Lightstone, Ernest Rawley and N. A. Taylor, canvasmen. TENT 28 HEART AWARD WINNERS In 1947 the late Peter Campbell, then president of the Maple Leaf Baseball Club, was singled out by the Variety Club for his great work and presented with a gift to symbolize it. The following year Conn Smythe, president of the Maple Leaf Hockey Club, was similarly honored. By vote of the tent it was decided to undertake an annual award for the member who had done the most to serve its cause and that this was to be known as a “Heart Award.” The winners since its inception are—1948: John J.
