P., Choral Director See Choir of the Russian Metrooolitan Church in Paris ALBANESE, LICIA, Soprano The raven-haired lyric so¬ prano, Licia Albanese, was born in Bari, Italy. Her par¬ ents were great music lovers and duly proud of the colora¬ tura achievements of Licia's older sister, which, for a time, overshadowed Licia's own exquisite soprano. This, how¬ ever, did not last long, as Licia, determined to prove she also could sing, decided to surprise her father on his birthday with a song es¬ pecially for him. Completely astounded by the qualify of Licia's still immature but beautiful voice, her family at once recognized her ability and Immediately sent her away to study. In Milan she began serious study and later took first place in a national contest for young singers. Miss Albanese's formal operatic debut came in 1936, and was a highly dramatic one. While still a student, she attended a performance of "Madama Butterfly “ at the Royal Theatre in Rome. However, the regular prima donna took ill at the last moment and was unable to per¬ form. Someone suggested to the frantic stage director a young girl in the audience by the name of Albanese who knew the role, and she was actually yanked from the audience into the leading part. After that, success was hers. Opera houses throughout Europe welcomed her. Finally in 1 940 she came to America and made a sensational and memorable debut in the role of Butterfly. Since that time her voice has reached millions of Americans, particularly through radio. She has been heard each week as star of the Conti Program, and was twice chosen by Toscanini for the complete radio performances of ''La Boheme" and "La Traviata."
