BEECHAM, SIR THOMAS, BART., Conductor
Sir Thomas Beecham, Bart., one of the world's greatest conductors and one of Eng¬ land's most fascinating per¬ sonalities, was born at St.
Helens, Lancashire. At the tender age of five, his musi¬ cal proclivities revealed them¬ selves, and in later years he received some training at Rossall School and Wadham Col¬ lege, Oxford. However, for the most part. Sir Thomas is the product of self-teaching.
His father's position as a prominent business man af¬ forded Sir Thomas early op¬ portunity for conducting, and as a young boy he showed complete knowledge of scores and command of an amateur orchestra near Liverpool.
To gain experience he toured with opera, and in 1905 made his first appearance in London with the Queen's Hall Orchestra. The following year he established the New Symphony Orchestra and in 1908 the Beecham Symphony Orchestra. Through this organization Sir Thomas produced impor¬ tant concert works on behalf of the composer Delius, who otherwise would have remained much longer in obscurity.
Sir Thomas also sacrificed a great deal of money to the cause of opera, and memorable Beecham opera seasons were given each year from 1915 to 19 20 at various London theatres, including Covent Garden. After this move for the advancement of opera. Sir Thomas founded the famous London Philharmonic Orchestra and brought it to its present high standard of organization which ranks it with the finest orchestras in the world. Re¬ cently, he formed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Sir Thomas has been known in this country for his leadership of many of our leading symphony orchestras and for his conducting at the Metropolitan Opera House. There is no question that Sir Thomas' career is a complete and selfless devotion to
his art.
