BERNSTEIN, LEONARD, Conductor The composer of such di¬ verse utterances as the mighty "Jeremiah Symphony", the riotous ballet, "Fancy Free", and its big Broadway sister,
"On the Town", would, of necessity, be a personality of many facets. To balance a tremendous talent, he would require a rather solid tech¬ nical equipment. Boston-born (1918) Leonard Bernstein has certainly had his share of the latter.
At Harvard, he studied com¬ position with Walter Piston and Edward Burlingame Hill.
Later, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he worked with Fritz Reiner in conducting, Randall Thompson in orchestration and Mme Isabella Vengerova in piano. At Tanglewood, where Mr. Bernstein spent the summer of 1942 as assistant to Koussevifzky, he caught the attention of Artur Rodzinski, who engaged him as assistant conductor for the New York Phil¬ harmonic season of 1943-44.
The story of his meteoric introduction shortly after, to the world at large, is legendary. Rodzinski was out of town; guest conductor Bruno Walter was indisposed, leaving the youthful Mr. Bernstein up to bat. As the Daily News reported later: ", . . Make it and you're a hero. Muff it and you're a dope . . . He made it."
Today he serves as conductor of the New York City Symphony, as guest conductor of the Boston Symphony, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Lewisohn Sta¬ dium orchestras. In the spring of 1947 he made a series of appearances as guest director of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra.
