Courboin's organ playing has become a symbol of virtuosity on two continents; he has combined a dazzling technique with musicianship of the highest order. A native of Antwerp, Belgium, Dr. Courboin showed talent at an early age. His musical studies were carried on both at the Antwerp and the Brussels Conservatories. At the tender age of 10, he entered Notre Dame College in Antwerp, and two years later he was playing the organ in the great college chapel for all the services. He then proceeded to win the International Organ Prize and not long after found himself appointed to the coveted post of organist at the Antwerp Cathedral. Coming to America in 1904, Dr. Courboin settled for ten years in Oswego, New York. Later he occupied a series of important posts, including that of municipal organist at Springfield, Massachusetts. His career in America really got under way in 1919, when he was chosen as guest soloist for the huge Grand Court Organ at Wanamaker's, Philadelphia. During that season his recitals were attended by one hundred and thirty-five thousand people, topping all past records. Since then. Dr. Courboin's name has been a by-word for fiery and brilliant organ playing. His repertoire embraces over five hundred memorized compositions. Today with such monumental episodes behind him, he holds the distinguished position of organist and director of music at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. ARIA (from "Suite No. 3, in D") J. S.
