He is a native of their town, grew up with them, played in the "Pops" Orchestra and finally stepped to the conduc¬ tor's podium. This was quite an advancement, for the leader¬ ship of the "Pops" is a large order. A gap must be bridged between the "boogie-woogies" and the " highbrows ," an achievement realized through the able direction of Arthur Fiedler. For the last seventeen summers it has been Fiedler who guides the Boston "Pops" in sparkling, melodious music, played fo a fare-you-well with such lilting charm and saucy verve that the concerts have long been recognized as an established part of America's musical life. Fiedler's "middle of the road music," heard each Tuesday evening over the ABC network during the spring season, has a very special public of its own.
