GOLSCHMANN, VLADIMIR, Conductor
The illustrious conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Golschmann, is one of the most notable figures today on the international musical scene. Under his able guidance this organization has achieved tre¬ mendous results and has attained a position of eminence among the leading ensembles of the country.
Vladimir Golschmann comes of a family of early Russian expatriates who settled in Paris, where he was born in 1893. His father was a writer and mathematician. Pianist in childhood, violinist in youth, Golschmann was scarcely out of his teens before he became concertmaster of the great French Orchestra sent by the government to tour this country during World War I. Shortly after, he founded the famous Concerts Golschmann. This marked the beginning of his career as a conductor. '
In 7925, Golschmann visited the United States as conductor of the Swedish Ballet. Invited to direct an extra concert of the New York Symphony, he created such furor that Walter Damrosch insisted on his being engaged as guest conductor for two subsequent seasons. After this he made other guest appearances on the continent and elsewhere. The city of St. Louis terminated these guest appearances by naming him permanent conductor of the St. Louis Symphony. Immediately he set about forming a finer body of musicians, a task in which he has been remarkably successful.
