There is no music he does not conduct with astonishing realization of the composer's intention; no period of music he cannot reveal in new and beautiful guise. As artist, conductor and composer, he has impressed himself upon the pages of contemporary music history. Goossens was born in London on May 26, 1893, and is descended from a family of Belgian goldsmiths. His musical education began when he was 10 years old, at which time his parents sent him to Belgium to begin his studies at the Conservatory of Bruges. From there he went to Liverpool and studied piano, violin and composition, winning medals in all three branches of his art. He graduated from the Royal College of Music, in London, in 1911. At a time when most musicians were still conservatory-bound, young Goossens had already proved his genius, and by the age of 22, fame had already touched him. To Sir Thomas Beecham, Bart., goes the credit for discovering Goossens' talent as a conductor. He was called upon in an emergency to conduct an opera of Stanford — "The Critic," and came through the ordeal with flying colors. He was immediately engaged permanently as a member of Beecham's opera company. Goossens' American debut came in 1922 when he became conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; in 1931 he took over the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He served as musical director and con¬ ductor of this group — one of the nation's great musical organizations — until early in 1947, when he resigned to assume the musical directorship of the Symphony Orchestra of Sydney, Australia. Ravel and Debussy. Of a musical family, Grandjany began studying the harp at the age of eight. Five years later he became a pupil at the Paris Conservatoire. For his remarkable instrumental proficiency he won first prize, and at the same time captured highest honors in harmony. Tours throughout France were followed by a London debut, and Grandjany soon was acclaimed as an artist of the first rank. His American debut, which took place in New York, brought him recognition throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to brilliant virtuosity, Mr. Grandjany has devoted consider¬ able time to composition. Among his original works for the harp are "Rhapsody," "Deux Chansons Populaires Francoises," "Children at Play," and "Automne." He has also enriched the harp literature by numerous transcriptions of works by such composers as Couperin, Rameau, Sammarfini, Soeillet, Handel and Bach. Marcel Grandjany's stunning artistry and sensitive musicianship shine forth with power and beauty in all his performances — performances show¬ ing remarkable testimony to his sympathy in interpreting great music.
