HEIFETZ, JASCHA, Violinist
Heifetz was born in Vilna,
Russia, on February 2, 1901.
Under the tutelage of his father, a professional musi¬ cian, he received his first violin instruction. (Years later, he was to make a triumphant re¬ turn to his native city, and was to find his first tiny violin in its monogrammed case, which had been embroidered by his mother.) The next step was the Royal School of Vilna where he studied for three years. His public debut oc¬ curred four years later when he played the Mendelssohn Concerto, and the following season saw him a pupil of the great Leopold Auer. With fame acquired in Russia, he now launched his career further in Berlin. Performances with the Philharmonic under Arthur Nikisch were followed by appearances with orchestras of Leipzig and Vienna.
At the outbreak of the first World War, Heifetz toured the Scandinavian countries and later came to New York. His American debut took place at Carnegie Hall on October 27, 1917. This performance was so amazing that he was hailed by leading concert critics as the greatest talent of his gen¬ eration. Since that time, the over-all effect of a Heifetz performance — the breathtaking technique, the brilliant tone and polished phrasing — have combined to provide concert audiences with stirring and "Unforgettable moments.
Heifetz made his first recordings at the age of nine. Today, he has to his credit the recorded performances of practically every major violin concerto. He has also published more than a hundred transcriptions of his own, and was recently revealed as a composer of popular songs under the name of Jim Hoyl!
