LANDOWSKA, WANDA, Harpsichordist "This world of Wanda Lan¬ dowska's creating is like a ref¬ uge from harshness. It is soft and soothing and brings a kind of privacy back into a world that needs it."
The Warsaw born and edu¬ cated artist holds a place in the field of music which is very nearly unique. The greatest living authority and artist on ancient instruments and music for ancient instruments, she is generally given credit for in¬ spiring the revival of the harp¬ sichord and has , in fact, de¬ signed her own instrument which has two keyboards and a multiplicity of pedals. She is also a pianist of splendid power, composer, author, world traveler and authority on world classics.
Since 1940 Mme Landowska has made her home unobtrusively in a big, quiet apartment near Manhattan's Central Park. She rarely appears in public, does not attend concerts, recitals, lectures or other such events and sees few people outside of her musical and literary friends and a small group of pupils. She spends her time now giving occasional concerts, recording, writ¬ ing, reading from her extensive library and seated at the harpsichord, where she often plays until the early hours of the morning.
Although the harpsichord's dynamic range is more limited than that of the piano, it has its own tonal qualities characterized by unusual clarity and resonance. No less of an expert than Wanda Landowska, with her consum¬ mate musicianship and artistic temperament, could achieve such clarity of phrasing, majesty of rhythm and control of tone.
