B., Chorai Director See London Madrigal Group, The LEHMANN, LOTTE, Soprano The world-renowned singer, whom i the Viennese fondly call their " geliebt Lehmann," was born in a little town on the North Sea. She made her op¬ eratic debut in Hamburg in a small part, but her first big success came when, on short notice, she substituted in the role of Elsa in “ Lohengrin From then on, she was given principal parts. At the Viennese State Op¬ era, where she was engaged in 1916, Mme Lehmann was to become the outstanding inter¬ preter of Richard Strauss' works. Here she created Ariane, and here she obtained brilliant success as the Marechale in "Der Rosenkavalier." Her first performance in "Fidelio," at the Beethoven Centenary in Vienna, was a new triumph for her. Later she scored even greater successes with Toscanini at the Salzburg Festival in the same opera. Mme Lehmann has concertized in nearly all the countries of the world. She first visited this country during the 1930-31 season as a member of the Chicago Opera Company. Her New York recital debut occurred on January 7, 1932, and two years later she appeared on the stage of the Metropolitan as Sieglinde. Since that time America has claimed her, not only as the first Lady of Song, but as one of the greatest lieder singers of all time.
