Born in Norfolk, Va., and reared in the parsonage of the Methodist Church where her father was minister. Miss Maynor received her first mu¬ sical experience as a choir singer. At fourteen, she entered Hampton Institute where she specialized in home economics, and purely as a side line, sang in its choir. Later, she was to tour Europe with this Institute's famous singing group, and one of her treasured memories of the trip is that of singing in the Mozarteum at Salz¬ burg in 1930. Upon graduation from Hampton, she attended the West¬ minster Choir School in Princeton, planning eventually to become a teacher of voice. Interested friends, however, insisted that she cultivate her own voice for concert work and in 1936 she came to New York for serious study. For three years she struggled with a minimum of funds, working feverishly on her music and language studies. Finally, in the summer of 1939, Miss May nor' s "break" came. Along with hundreds of other music lovers and students, she visited the Berkshire Music Festival. A chance audition for Serge Koussevitzky at the Festival brought her almost overnight to the attention of the musical world. Now the excep¬ tional beauty of her style and the purity of her singing have established her reputation as "one of the greatest voices of the twentieth century."
