Raised by a grandfather and father experienced in child psychology, the young Mr. Melchior studied music because he wished to do so, and because he found immense satisfaction in singing. With his blind sister, Agnes, he would sit in the Royal Opera and hear many of the operas that he was to sing later in life. To her, he owes many of the telling influences that started him on his great career. In 1908, Mr. Melchior began to concentrate seriously on his vocal lessons. Four years later, a privilege granted only the most gifted students of the country was awarded him when he was admitted to the School of the Royal Opera. In 1919 he appeared at Queen's Hall in London, where Hugh Walpole, dropping in by chance, was so impressed by the vigor and strength of the tenor's voice, that from then on, he helped Lauritz Melchior with money, sound advice and encouragement. It was on Walpole's suggestion that Melchior went to Bayreuth. There he received an invitation from Cosima and Siegfried Wagner to study the Wagnerian roles with them. From that time on, the name of Melchior has been associated with Richard Wagner's operas throughout the world. At the Metropolitan Opera House, where he has made history in the number and diversity of his appearances, he has been a mainstay of the Wagnerian wing since 1926.
