MELTON, JAMES, Tenor
James Melton, one of the leading tenors of the Metro¬ politan Opera Association, has achieved nation-wide fame as a motion picture, con¬ cert and radio artist. His voice is an unusual combina¬ tion of lyric qualify and deep richness. The word "magnetic" best describes the Melton per¬ sonality and performance.
Six-feet-tw o, Melton hails from Georgia. His early boy¬ hood was spent in Florida and he made his first public ap¬ pearance as a soloist in a church choir, holding a hymn book which was almost as big as himself. Singing has been a part of his life ever since. *
He entered the University of Florida with the purpose of studying law. Soon he found a place as saxophonist in the college band and as singer in the Glee Club. One day, the President of the University heard his voice, expressed his interest and advised him to turn his career in this direction. This he did, but success was not handed to Melton on a silver platter. He had to tread every rung of the ladder before he reached his present pinnacle of success, and that included several years as a member of the Revelers Quartet of radio fame.
Melton's enthusiasm for music is endless. He is always interested and ready to sing the music the public likes to hear. In addition to the standard operatic and concert hall fare, Melton's repertoire embraces more than 3,000 songs, many of which he includes in his weekly broadcasts as master of ceremonies and featured artist on "Harvest of Stars" over NBC.
