MERRIMAN, NAN, Mezzo-soprano
If earliest memory serves her correctly. Nan Merriman has lived with but a single purpose — that of someday being a great singing star. Even with full awareness of the hard struggle involved in such a career, her en¬ thusiasm remained undimmed.
After graduating from Mount Mercy Academy in Pittsburgh, Miss Merriman moved with her musical family to California. Here she spent four gruelling years — rising at six to practice before commencing the day's office work — evenings given over to vocal lessons, diction and languages. Her musical career got under its official way in 1940, when she won a contest to sing at an Easter Sunrise Service; 30,000 people in Hollywood witnessed this performance which was broadcast to the world and widely televised. The winning of another contest led to her tremendously successful operatic debut with the Cincinnati Opera Company, and from then on to a whirlwind series of operatic and concert activities in that city. In her rise to stardom she also won a nation-wide singing contest sponsored by the National Federa¬ tion of Music Clubs.
The outstanding event of Miss Merriman's musical life was meeting Tos¬ canini. It all came about one evening when the Maestro, listening-in to hear the voice that had been compared to Melba's in its prime, decided to arrange an audition for the young American mezzo-soprano. The result was an engagement for an all-Verdi concert and NBC broadcasts of opera under his direction as well as other important performances. Today Nan Merriman's artistic future is assured.
