PAGANINI QUARTET, THE
fiew realize that the distinguished foursome of the Paganini Quartet represents a dramatic story, a story of reunion and of great tradition. It is composed of Henri Temianka, First Violin ; Gustave Rosseels, Second Violin ■, Robert Courte, Viola, and Robert Maas, 'Cello — former member of the Pro Arte Quartet — four noted artists who knew each other musically and personally for many years in Belgium before joining forces in the United States in 1946. The Quartet takes its name from the instruments it uses — all made by Stradivarius and at one time owned by the virtuoso, Paganini. They are valued at $2 50,000.
The American public had long been clamoring for chamber music. Word of the private performances of this group in California soon spread, and in 1946, the Paganini Quartet was organized as a concert group. Their debut performances in a series of four concerts at the University of California were played to an overflow crowd, and later appearances were awaited every¬ where with unprecedented anticipation. Public and critics alike hailed them as a tremendous addition to the American musical scene. This enthusiasm also greeted them in Washington, D. C.; when they performed the entire Beethoven Cycle in six concerts.
In a single year the Paganini Quartet has become one of the leading attractions of the concert world, and eager audiences await their perform¬ ances from coast to coast.
