PRIMROSE, WILLIAM, Violist The unrivaled master of the viola hails from Glasgow,
Scotland. As a child, he studied the violin, and at the age of ten, made his debut playing the Mendelssohn Concerto. Six years later, through the enthu¬ siasm of the principal of the London Guildhall School of Music, Primrose was enabled to further his education at that in¬ stitution. In 1923 he made his London debut with the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra.
But it was for the deeperthroated viola that Primrose nourished his greatest passion.
Following the advice and encouragement of Eugene Ysaye, the young artist now turned his energies in this direction. •
From 1930 to 1935, Primrose toured the world with the London String Quartet. When the group disbanded, he made his solo debut with Sir Thomas Beecham, Bart., in London. In 1937 he assumed the position of first viol¬ ist for Toscanini in the new hand-picked NBC Orchestra. Since 1942, when he left this group, he has devoted his time to solo work.
Probably his most important service has been his lifting of the viola from its place in the orchestra to the position of a recital instrument. New interest has recently centered about the viola , about its literature and about its mechanism, an interest furthered in the latter direction by Primrose's playing a viola made recently by William Moennig of Philadelphia.
