Every¬ body knows and loves the bril¬ liant Polish-born virtuoso, whose performances of Chopin rank among the immortal moments of concert history. Rubinstein was born in 1890; for his fourth birthday, the doting inhabitants of his native Lodz presented him with visiting cards bearing the inscription, " Artur Rubinstein, Artist Musician." Not long af¬ ter, Joseph Joachim, deeply impressed with the boy, was to assume responsibility for his musical future. A pupil of Liszt gave him piano lessons; Max Bruch was one of his composition instructors. At eleven, Rubinstein made his debut in Berlin, and in five years he had shared his talents with most of Germany and Poland. In 1906 he came to America, making his debut here with the Philadelphia Orchestra. During that first tour, which lasted for three months, he gave seventy-five concerts. Rubinstein spent the next four years in Paris, re-practicing, re-studying and, to quote him, " shedding my maturity." All Europe was to hear a new Rubinstein — then all America — and presently, all the world! Today his artistry embraces the concert platform, radio and motion pictures — in the latter field not only as the recording artist for the sound tracks of the film "I've Always Loved You," but as actor-performing artist in " Carnegie Hall," and most recently in "Memory of Love," the story of Clara Schumann.
