Fred Waring (filming "Variety Show" at the time) noticed the college's dynamic Glee Club leader, and was so impressed that he was to of¬ fer him full charge of the new Waring Glee Club. So — Robert Shaw, who had planned to follow in the foot¬ steps of his minister father, but who had inherited too much musical talent from his singer mother, was headed for the career of top choral con¬ ductor in the country! The Waring Glee Club received its share of fame both on the air and in Billy Rose's "Aquacade" at the World's Fair. Later, Billy Rose was to come to Shaw for the choral direction of his "Carmen Jones." But it was the young man's non-professional Collegiate Chorale, organized in 1941, whose performances with outstanding symphony orchestras (conducted by such names as Toscanini and Stokowski ) brought him his biggest laurels j these included a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Annual Award from the National Association of Composers and Conductors. Shaw was soon to organize his RCA Victor Chorale, whos» many recordings have met with unparalleled enthusiasm. As orchestral conductor, he has had his share of triumphs, among them the leadership of the NBC Symphony Orchestra and Invitation to Music, both over the air. As narrator, he has made successful record appearances — in his children's album based on the A. A. Milne stories and in the Airborne Symphony, when he assumed the role of monitor. At present, he is associ¬ ated with the Juilliard School of Music. See: Collegiate Chorale, The RCA Victor Chamber Orchestra RCA Victor Chorale RCA Victor Orchestra
