SPELLMAN, FRANCIS CARDINAL,
With the album of selections from his own Prayers and Poems, His Eminence , Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of New York, joined the ranks of RCA Victor recording artists.
Cardinal Spellman was born in Whitman, Mass., May 4,
1889, and received his gram¬ mar and high school educa¬ tion there. He received his A.B. degree at Fordham Uni¬ versity. On May 14, 1916, he was ordained in Rome, where he had that same year be¬ come Doctor of Sacred Theol¬ ogy at the University of Propaganda. From 1916-18, he was assistant at All Saints' Church in Roxbury, Mass. During the next four years, he served on the editorial staff of the "Boston Pilot."
He was assistant Chancellor to the' Archdiocese of Boston from 1922-25, and from then until 1932, when he was consecrated Titular Bishop of Sila in Rome, he was attache to the Secretary of State's Office in the Vatican.
From 1932-39, he served his native state of Massachusetts as Auxiliary Bishop of Boston. After the first year, he became Pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Newton Center.
In April, 1939, he was appointed Archbishop of New York and the follow¬ ing month was installed at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Seven months later, he became Military Vicar for the United States. On February 2, 1946, he was elevated to the Cardinalate.
Cardinal Spellman holds several honorary degrees and is the author of numerous books.
