See Saint 9.85 10.85 2.85 STEBER, ELEANOR, Soprano Lovely Eleanor Steber has become one of America's truly distinguished stars of opera and concert stage, and of ra¬ dio and recordings. Her so¬ prano voice has charmed mil¬ lions on the weekly broadcasts of the Voice of Firestone as well as through broadcasts of the Philharmonic-Symphony Or¬ chestra of New York and the Metropolitan Opera Associa¬ tion. Miss Steber's success is based on talent, sincerity of purpose and hard work. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, she began her singing career, like many other famous singers, as a church solo¬ ist in her home town. When she graduated from high school in Wheeling she was determined to carve herself a singing career. She received much encour¬ agement and support from her parents; her mother, on accomplished musi¬ cian, was her first vocal teacher. Later she worked her way through the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. This was followed by private study with Paul Althouse, one of the leading Metropolitan tenors. By winning a chance to sing the role of Senta in " The Flying Dutchman " at the Boston Opera House, Miss Steber scored her first success. The real break came, however, when she entered the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air. Through this. Miss Steber found herself walking through the doors of the Metropolitan and into national prominence. Her debut as Sophie in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" was welcomed by critics with exceptional enthusiasm. Today, her repertoire embraces more than a dozen operatic roles and her artistry in Mozartian opera — particu¬ larly ''The Marriage of Figaro" and "Abduction from the Seraglio" — has won her the hearts of all music lovers. A vigorous expounder of the Music-for-Everyone theory, he has accomplished miracles for music-makers and music-lovers throughout the world. Out¬ standing examples were his All-American Youth Orchestra, composed of the most talented young players from every state in the union, and the New York City Symphony Orchestra created at the request of exMayor LaCuardia.
