SWARTHOUT, GLADYS, Mezzo-soprano
The charming and vivacious mezzo-soprano was born in the small town of Deepwater ,
Missouri. Gladys Swarthout early decided to become a great singer. Her eventual goal was the stage of the Metropolitan Opera — a goal that was realized in 192 9. At that time she made her debut in the role of La Cieca in Ponchielli's opera, "La Gioconda."
Soon afterwards she was among the first of the Metro¬ politan's roster of stars to go to Hollywood for film roles.
A decisive moment in Gladys Swarthout's career came after a performance by Mary Garden as the sultry, electric beauty. Carmen. Miss Swarthout was singing the secondary role of Mercedes that night, and, at the end of the opera. Miss Garden summoned the young Gladys to her dressing room. Timid and trembling at the thought of some grave mistake, she approached the prima donna. From her shoulders Miss Garden removed the immense, deep-fringed embroidered shawl which she had always worn as Carmen, and precipitously ripped it in half. "One half for me," she said simply, " and the other half for you, my dear. For you will be our next great Carmen, I am sure." Now draping the piano in the music room of Miss Swarthout's Connecticut home is this historic shawl.
Since that time she has added triumph after triumph to her musical career and has proved to be an amazing, versatile artist. At a Swarthout concert in an auditorium or on the radio you can expect every type of song . . . songs ranging from German lieder, French folk songs, and operatic arias to Negro spirituals and musical comedy favorites. Her recordings for RCA Victor mirror the wide range of her artistic achievements.
