Te RCA VICTOR RED SEAL RECORDS TEYTE, MAGGIE, Soprano (Continued) this , she appeared in concert at Queens Hall and became a member of the Beecham Opera Company. In 1912, Maggie Teyte came to America to score many successes here in the role of Cinderella. Concert and operatic tours followed both here and abroad, tours that established her, among other things, as an outstanding singer of French art songs. Tall, stately, and possessing uncommonly attractive stage presence. Miss Thebom also has a wealth of temperament, warmth and dra¬ matic and musical expressive¬ ness. She is the daughter of Swed¬ ish parents who still live in her native town of Canton, Ohio. Miss Thebom went to business school and later became a sec¬ retary in a Canton business concern. A long-planned vacation trip to Sweden was responsible for her musical career. On the way over, she was heard by a former accompanist of the great contralto, Marian Anderson. He was so impressed that he gave the young singer a card of introduction to a well-known New York City teacher; she returned home to start her training. The usual drudgery of study and deferred hope intervened before the great impresario Sol Hurok heard her, arranged for an audition before an audience of out-of-town managers, and managed to reveal his "discovery" to the country at large before her momen¬ tous recital debut in New York. It was shortly after this that the Metropolitan engaged Miss Thebom. Inside of one year, her dream had come true! Not only was she the holder of a coveted Met contract, but Hollywood, quick to realize her film possibilities, snapped her up for a featured role in "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," which was released nationallv at the same time she made her operatic debut. Whether it is a simple folk song, an operatic aria, a rollicking song of the sea or a Negro spiritual, the Thomas interpretation is impressive — for his is a gift of simplicity that lights up the song — whatever it may be. Thomas was born in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, son of a Methodist min¬ ister. His father conducted camp meetings and, as a boy, John Charles was the soprano and third voice in a trio. With his father's duties requiring constant travel, the boy received his primary education in whatever towns they happened to be. Finally the family settled long enough in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for John Charles to attend Conway Hall, a prep school. It was here that he became interested in medicine, so much so that he had difficulty in choosing between music and medicine. Fortunately, at this cru¬ cial moment, he was awarded a scholarship by the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. His career began in light opera. But this was not his aim. He was inter¬ ested in the more serious form of his art. With hard study he prepared him¬ self for opera and launched his career at the Royal Opera House in Brussels. Today, as one of the outstanding Metropolitan baritones, as well as a concert and radio favorite, John Charles Thomas has given unstintingly of his glorious artistry for the enjoyment of music lovers the world over.
