TIBBETT, LAWRENCE, Baritone The success of opera and concert baritone Lawrence Tibbett is the result of a steady climb. At the Metropolitan he has not only been pre-eminent in the greatest baritone roles in operatic literature, but he has also created the leading roles in such American operas as "The Emperor Jones,"
"Merry Mount," " The King's Henchman" and ", Peter Ibbetson."
Born in Bakersfield, Califor¬ nia, Lawrence Tibbett comes of proud American fighting stock; he is of the opinion that this same pioneer spirit fits as snugly ] into the picture of American culture as it does into American history. Tibbett himself has been a trail blazer for Ameri¬ can music.
During his high school and college days he "went out" for dramatics and sang in the school glee clubs. His first ambition was to become an actor, but encouraged by the novelist Rupert Hughes and other friends to study voice, he went to New York and studied under Frank La Forge.
Light opera and church singing were the extent of his activity until an audition with the Metropolitan won him a contract. At the same time a Broadway producer came forward with a rather tempting offer in a musical comedy. In a monetary sense, this was more appealing — but the long view of an operatic career was closer to his heart. He scaled those heights and then scored additional successes in radio and motion pictures.
Since that time Lawrence Tibbett has thrilled countless audiences with his singing — singing that is alive at every point with intelligence and keen sense of drama.
