TOSCANINI, ARTURO, Conductor Since the historic" Rio per¬ formance of Aida, over sixty years ago, when Arturo Tosca¬ nini hurriedly stepped info the capacity of conductor for the first time, he has become a liv¬ ing legend — a legend of per¬ fection. As a musician and as a fighter for the rights of men, he represents the wisdom of years combined with the open¬ ness and the freshness of a completely youthful .spirit.
He was born in P,arma, Italy, in 1867, the son of a soldier of Garibaldi. At nine, he entered the local conservatory, and within two years won a 'cello scholarship. At eighteen, he held a graduate diploma in 'cello, pianoforte and composition. Shortly after this he embarked on a South American tour as 'cellist and secofid chorus master for the Brazilian impresario, Claudio Rossi; it was during this time that he made his sensa¬ tional debut as a conductor.
Under Toscanini's baton, the last half-century has witnessed some of music's greatest moments: the world premieres of Leoncavallo's " I Pagliacci'1 and Puccini's "La Boheme"; the Italian premiere of Wagner's "Die Gotterddmmerung"; seven fabulous seasons of the Metropolitan Opera House (1908-15); monumental performances by the La Scala, the Philharmonic-Symphony Or¬ chestra of New York, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
That a genius such as this will not be lost to posterity is one of the most rewarding achievements of the modern science of recording.
