Wa RCA VICTOR RED SEAL RECORDS WARREN, LEONARD, Baritone Leonard Warren's associa¬ tion with the Metropolitan Op¬ era Company as one of its most brilliant young artists is rather unique in that he had had no previous operatic ex¬ perience. Born in New York and educated at Columbia University , Mr. Warren served his chief apprenticeship with the Radio City Music Hall Glee Club. He qualified for the Metropolitan Auditions of the Air and was chosen for first honors from among more than seven hundred singers I Featured in many leading roles (and creating that of llo in the world premiere of Menotti's "The Island God"), the baritone has made a sensational name for himself in the field of opera. His concert record is no less impressive. Soloist with many of the coun¬ try s leading orchestras , he has thrilled audiences both in person and over the air waves with his rich singing and dramatic artistry. Particularly through recordings, however, has Leonard Warren's musical personality made itself known to enthusiastic millions, not only in the United States but in South America, where he has starred in operatic roles and concert appear¬ ances for the past five years, and in Europe, where he is regarded as one of America's outstanding musical talents. Their professional associa¬ tion was the result of a practical joke aboard a steamship bound for Puerto Rico. Mr. Whittemore and Mr. Lowe arrived in San Juan and learned that a mischievous friend had notified Puerto Rican musical authorities that a famous American two-piano team was arriving in San Juan to seek musical engage¬ ments. Upon their arrival, the two pianists decided to go through with the joke— they made 17 transcriptions of music for two pianos, rehearsed their program quickly and played to a sold out concert audience. Their initial per¬ formance together was the first of many the duo-pianists have made in the past ten years. After their Puerto Rico concert, Whittemore and Lowe returned to New York and gave a debut recital at Town Hall in 1940. Successful concert and radio appearances followed and the team was on its way to becoming one of the outstanding two-piano combinations when their career was interrupted by the war. Enlisting together in the United States Navy, Whittemore and Lowe retained their status as musicians, traveled thousands of miles, giving concerts for servicemen in the United States and the Pacific. Honorably discharged from the Navy early in 1946 after four years of service, they resumed their concert careers and were signed to record exclu¬ sively for RCA Victor. In the past two seasons, the duo-pianists have averaged more than sixty concerts each season, performing in the continental United States as well as Hawaii. They are particularly noted for concert programs that combine classical repertoire with unusual arrangements of popular musical fare.
