Just as the dinner is being served he is pardoned. The sheriff's wife has thirteen at the table and sends her daughter to get someone from the street to make fourteen. The tramp is the lucky one, but when he is about to eat the dinner the sheriff comes. The tramp leaves in haste, but takes the dinner with him and eats it alone on a freight train.
