BOURDON, ROSARIO, Musical Director
Rosario Bourdon was born at Montreal, Canada, in 1885. He took up the’cello,a most difficult instrument for an ungrown child, when he was only seven years old, and two years later he appeared in public. He was sent to Europe for study; and at twelve he graduated from the conservatory at Ghent, with the highest honors. He received also the first prize for chamber music. He then toured Europe as a child prodigy. He continued concertizing and private study until 1900, when, as a lad of fifteen, he made his American début at Montreal. A year or so later he joined the Cincinnati Orchestra under Van Der Stucken; in 1904 he became ’cellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra, with concert appearances as soloist. Preferring conducting to concert-playing, he returned to Europe for further study, and, on coming back to America, played a while with the St. Paul Orchestra, of which he was Assistant Conductor. He joined the Victor staff in 1911 as Conductor and Arranger. He has made many notable contributions to the literature and the technique of recorded music.
