Don Jose, a young brigadier, betrothed to Micaela, a peasant girl in Fe his native village, is quarteredat | Seville near a factory where Carmen, a reckless and beautiful cigarette girl, By stabs a fellow-employee, and is arrested by Jose. She manages to fascinate him, and makes her escape. Jose is imprisoned for neglect of duty, fe but when released follows the gypsy DON JOSE AND CARMEN to Pastia’s Inn, where he finds Zuniga, his captain, and Escamillo, a Toreador, both paying court to Carmen. Stung with jealousy he deserts, and follows the band of smugglers Carmen has joined. The next act shows the smugglers’ camp, and Carmen, already tired of her soldier welcomes the Toreador, who has followed her. Jose is about to kill her when Micaela arrives with a summons from his dying mother. He goes, but threatens vengeance. In the last act Jose, half crazed with jealousy, kills Carmen outside the bull ring, where she is awaiting the triumphant Escamillo.
