This memorial, established to further the opportunities of promising graduate musical students, was the frst to uncover the talents of Muriel Kerr, Sadah Shuchari and Isabelle Yalkovsky. And when these fortunate students were allowed to play with the New York PhilharmonicSymphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, New York, their genius was at once acclaimed. It is, of course, impossible to foretell how far these youthful virtuosos may go. But judging from their extraordinary Victor records, the promise is brilliant indeed. Schumann-Heink has been long in America, and ee has been long and closely identified with American life. At the age of ten she was sent to the Convent of the Ursuline in Prague, where she sang in the choir, but entirely by ear. Her father was afterward transferred to Graz, where a teacher named Marietta von Le Clair, who had recognized the signs, offered to give the budding genius her efforts without pay. The wise teacher kept her on nothing but exercises for two years before she gave her songs by Mendelssohn, Schubert and other composers. In 1878 she made her first appearance at the Dresden Opera House as Azucena in “Il Trovatore.” Her first appearance in New York was in 1898. American audiences immediately took her to their hearts and refused to allow her to return to fF A Europe, since which time she has served the New World |(447/7 4. pots long and brilliantly. During the World War she endeared SCHUMANN-HEINK herself to further thousands by her song recitals in the army training camps. Her public appearances have become fewer since that time, but she still sings occasionally as an honored guest at the Metropolitan.
