He was born in Naples, and even as a child showed a desire to become a singer. At the age of 23, after he had studied for four years he made his début at the Teatro Reale, in Malta, as Amonasro in “Aida,” singing later at that house in nine other réles. Scotti’s career was now open to him. Engagements at the Teatro Reale, Madrid, and in Petrograd, Moscow, Warsaw, Odessa and London, established his reputation. Scotti is today a great favorite in America; his fine voice, his genial personality, his breadth of mtind, his enterprise, have won him an enviable place in the esteem of opera-goers. His records speak for themselves; they represent the best ideals and traditions of Italian singing. Although there have been, in half-forgotten musical history, master guitarists— Paganini was one—it is entirely safe to say that no living man has either realized or mastered the possibilities of this charming and piquant instrument, in a degree approaching the achievements of Segovia. Senor Segovia is entirely self-taught in the technique of the guitar, although, as is evident from his work, he had a thorough training in harmony and composition. He was born in Granada, and since the age of fourteen has played the guitar, deciding, after years of study, to make it his chief interest. It may appear strange that the music of Bach, much of it written for the vast and complicated pipe-organ, reveals new delicacy and color when played on the guitar—by Segovia. His astonishing playing for Victor records will reveal an artist both charming and unique. THE SEGOVIA RECORDS No. Size List p.
