At a time when his operatic enterprises had come to nought, and with spirits depressed and fortune gone, he began the great series of oratorios by which his genius lives today. “The Messiah” was first given in Dublin with a mere handful of performers—a chorus hardly more numerous than many a village church can get together for a harvest festival, serving to make known a work afterwards to be performed by thousands in massed choirs at a modern Handel festival.
