She was born in Berlin and made her first operatic appearance in Frankfort. She has sung the leading mezzo and contralto réles in Wagnerian opera, and in addition earned particular distinction as Azucena in “Il Trovatore,”’ her Victor record of ‘‘ Stride la vampa!”’ being a fine example of her singing in this réle. She also played an important part in the production of ** Boris Godounow,”’ by that strange Russian genius, Moussorgski. Her record from this work is noteworthy. Shortly before this he made a number of new records for the Victor. These numbers, which are among the great favorites of Mr. Paderewski’s concert repertoire, have been selected by this famous artist for his latest representation in the Victor Catalogue. They have been made since the new contract was signed and represent a noteworthy achievement in the recording of piano music. The piano has been one of the most difficult instruments to record satisfactorily, because notes played on the piano retain their full volume for a moment only, and the gradual diminution of the tone could PADEREWSKI not be satisfactorily maintained in the record. It is in this respect that a most satisfactory advance has been made by the Victor. Two of Paderewski’s own compositions and five Chopin numbers are here listed, and we are gratified that the technique and artistry of a master have been worthily reproduced.
