Within recent years most of us have given the greater part of our time to studying the rapid developments of the sound film, and we have perhaps forgotten ideas that were arising about the period when speech shattered the silent image. It is even possible that certain trends of cinematography were submerged in the riotous rush for dialogue — more especially in the German and French films of 1929 and 1930, which overlapped into the first year of the American dialogue cinema. Furthermore, so great has been the influx of the 105
