PROLOGUE A Great barn-like building. Cranes, scenery, men and women idling under the glare of huge lights, their faces sickly with greasepaint. It is a movie set. Time: 1930. A bell rings. Silence! Lights! Camera! Action! They are filming a last season's stage success. The two perspiring actors struggle to register love and affection and close into a sticky embrace. He kisses her on the neck, leaving a faint impress of make-up. "Cut." The supervisor has stepped in. "You can't do that." The scenario writer reaches for a cigarette. "Why not, in heaven's name?" "It won't get by the Maryland board." "But," protests the director, "it's right here in the script. This guy is in love with another man's wife. He's going away to China, going xv
